Actually, I really want you to open a nightclub if that’s your cup of tea (or probably shot of liquor in this particular scenario).

But before you dive into the in’s and out’s of running your very own nightclub, I want you to be properly prepared.

Which means that you need to take the steps to get your business structured and established the right way before you do anything else.

The very first step is to write a business plan.

Your business plan should include everything from a careful market analysis of your location…

To the accounting systems you will put in place and the long and short term financial projections for your business.

Here is a basic business plan outline to get you moving in the right direction, and hopefully kick that writer’s block in the ass:

  • Idea - What is your idea?
  • Marketing - Who are your customers and how will they find you?
  • Finances - How much will your business cost to start up, and where will this money come from?
  • Pricing - How much will your product or service cost for people to buy?
  • Profit - How much will you get to keep every time someone buys?

Think of your business plan as your friendly but firm guide as you navigate the complex and unpredictable waters of running a business in the entertainment and restaurant industry.

It will keep you focused and on track with your goals, while reminding you of the systems and structures you’ve put in place.

It’s no secret that good ‘ol Uncle Sam expects you to pay your dues…

Especially if you’re raking in the cash from being the new hip and happening club on the corner!

But if you’re going to be properly set up to pay your taxes and keep Uncle Sam and his friends over at the IRS happy…

Then you need to take the right steps to form a legal business entity. 

Ideally, you should go ahead and form an LLC.

While there are alternative options to structure your business, a Limited Liability Corporation is the most practical structure for most small businesses that are starting out.

The primary bonus to forming an LLC is that it will protect you from being held personally liable in the situation of a lawsuit against your business. 

So even if you somehow manage to lose your nightclub and everything pertaining to it…

You get to keep your car and your house.

I highly recommend bringing a lawyer or accountant in on this process if you are uncertain of which business structure is the right fit for your nightclub, however…

As they will be able to advise you on this important decision.

Once you have your business entity taken care of, it’s time to get that EIN number.

Registering for your tax identification number is relatively simple, and can be done online for free through the IRS’s website.

Finally, don’t forget business insurance!

And it is a step that should not be rushed.

That step is choosing the right location.

Your location is crucial, because ultimately...

A good concept in a bad location that doesn’t bring in traffic is pretty worthless.

But a busy location might have a rent price that is too high, therefore sending your occupancy expenses and operating percentages skyrocketing.

You’re actually selling an experience more than you are selling food and beverages the way that you would be in a traditional bar environment.

The concept of your nightclub will be the theme and atmosphere that you want to set, and this typically involves the kind of entertainment that you want to feature.

Don’t misunderstand me here, though.

Just because you need a website, doesn’t mean that you have to drop several thousand dollars on a professional web designer.

Whether you keep it simple, or take a flashier “go big or go home” approach to your nightclub’s sign…

Just make sure that street traffic can clearly see and read it.

A nightclub is ultimately about entertainment, so you will need to enjoy the entertainment industry and atmosphere if this will work for you. But if you’re excited by the nightclub life and the idea of running an entertainment based business, then you will be a great fit for starting your own.

They are heavy on equipment and labor costs, and this isn’t something to take lightly. Before you go all in with what’s left of your savings account, consider carefully the risk you will be taking on by investing in your nightclub.

As the owner of your nightclub, you will be heavily invested in the day to day operations of your club. It is likely that you will be the first to show up and the last to leave at night (or even the next morning!). It’s no secret that restaurants rarely turn a profit in the first year, or maybe even two to three years. Nightclubs are no exception. Brace yourself for at least a two year period of time before you start to see a return on your investment. This means that you will need considerable funds in reserve to make it through these first several years.

Weird/Long Hours

Just because “night” is in the title, doesn’t mean your hours will be limited to the evening. You will need to show up in the morning to ensure that your club is ready for the evening, and you will also need to be there after everyone goes home to ensure that the club is shut down properly. This results in weird hours in which you will spend more time working at your club than you will anywhere else. Plus, your long hours will probably have your head hitting the pillow in the early hours of the morning, and showing back up to the club before lunch after you wake up.
